留学生是什么意思
留学生是指在母国以外的留学的学生。
“留学生”这个词是日本人用中国的汉字创造的。
唐朝时，日本政府为了吸取中国的先进文化，曾多次派遣唐使来中国。遣唐使团是外交使节，在中国停留的时间不能过长，因而难以更好地吸取中国的先进文化。所以日本政府从第二次派遣唐使起，就同时派遣“留学生”和“还学生”。所谓“留学生”就是当遣唐使等回国后仍然留在中国学习的学生，“还学生”则在遣唐使回国时一起回国。

什么叫“留学生”？

留学，旧称留洋，一般是指一个人去母国以外的国家接受各类教育，时间可以为短期或长期（从几个星期到几年）。这些人被称为“留学生”。在中国大陆，学生把前往香港、澳门等地区的学习也称为留学,这是由于这些地区有着不同的教育制度。另外，美国等国家组织的一类海外短期的交换学生计划，其英文名字“Studyabroad”直译也为留学，请参见海外研修（中国大陆称为海外交流）。
留学的原因主要有下：
1开阔眼界和经验
2学习与该国有关的语言、文化知识
3追求更好的教育条件。在从发展中国家到发达国家留学的学生中，这个原因最为常见。
4外交原因。政府之间为了表示亲善合作，可能互派学生、官员或者军人到对方学校学习。
5与移民有关的原因，例如：
6随父母暂时居住在外国的未成年人。
7以留学生身份申请学生签证，获得暂时定居权。
8熟悉该国社会，积累经验，为以后永久性定居作准备。
